Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe ex-president, dies aged 95

Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s first post-independence leader, has died aged 95.

He died after battling ill health, his family confirmed to the BBC. Mr Mugabe had been in hospital in Singapore since April.

He was ousted in a military coup in November 2017, ending three decades in power.

He won Zimbabwe’s first election after independence, becoming prime minister in 1980. He abolished the office in 1987, becoming president instead.

Mugabe’s early years were praised for broadening access to health and education for the black majority. But his controversial land reform programme sparked an economic collapse and his latter years were marked by rights abuses and corruption.

His successor, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, expressed his “utmost sadness”, calling Mr Mugabe “Zimbabwe’s founding father” and “an icon of liberation”.

Mr Mnangagwa had been Mr Mugabe’s deputy before replacing him.

‘Liberation icon’

Mr Mugabe was born on 21 February 1924 in what was then Rhodesia.

He was imprisoned for more than a decade without trial after criticising the government of Rhodesia in 1964.

In 1973, while still in prison, he was chosen as president of the Zimbabwe African National Union (Zanu), of which he was a founding member.

Once released, he adopted a militant stance, heading to Mozambique and directing guerrilla raids into Rhodesia. But he was also seen as a skilled negotiator.

Political agreements to end the crisis resulted in the new independent Republic of Zimbabwe, elections for which were first held in 1980.

Mr Mugabe, with his high profile in the independence movement, secured an overwhelming victory.

Former President and Founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Jerry John Rawlings in an answer to a question on who he voted for in the ongoing parliamentary primaries said he voted for the obvious one.

The former President had the crowd’s attention when he arrived at the polling centre at the Arts Centre in Accra to support his preferred candidate for the constituency.

Though he did not disclose the name of the contestant he voted for, his daughter, Zenator Rawlings is currently the Member of Parliament for that constituency-Klottey-Korle Constituency and one of the candidates vying for that seat.

“I voted for the obvious one,” he told Joy News after casting his ballot.

Mr Rawlings urged delegates to comport themselves during the election and not allow money to influence their choices.

“We should all comport ourselves and do the most logical obvious thing. They shouldn’t allow money to influence their choices,” he stated.

The NDC’s upcoming parliamentary primaries are currently underway in 157 constituencies across the country.

Some 524 aspirants have been cleared to contest in the polls.

91-year-old slay granny breaks the internet with hot new photos

Surprisingly, what appears impossible for some aged persons to do not seem same to this very one, as 91-year-old woman has gone viral on social media after dressing like a young girl in several photos.

My News Ghana has established.
Her fashion sense surprised social media users since she is considered too old for such dressing and make-up

In the photos, the old grandmother rather seem excited for following the rather trendy 21st Century way of dressing At 91, most grannies are either soaking up the sun at the comfort of their homes or too tired to enjoy the little things life has to offer.

However, Helen Van Winkle is cut from a different cloth and was not willing to let her age pull her away from fun and laughter.
